Student Achievement
Worthington currently has a rating of "Excellent" on the state report card. Average scores on the ACT and SAT college-entrance exams are above state and national averages. On the ACT test, the composite score for Worthington students was 24.4; SAT Critical Reading scores were 551; SAT Math scores were 592; and SAT Writing scores were 532.
Graduating Class of 2010
Approximately 93 percent planned to attend college or further educational training. Graduates from Thomas Worthington and Worthington Kilbourne high schools were offered over $12 million in scholarships.
Student Composition
As of October 2010, Worthington has one of the most ethnically diverse student populations among suburban school systems in Franklin County. Approximately 7 percent of our students are Asian, about 8 percent are Black-American, about 6 percent are Hispanic, approximately 6 percent are multiracial, and about 0.2 percent are American Indian. The district has approximately 429 students with limited English proficiency who speak approximately 30 different native languages.
Enrollment
9,283 (October 2010). High school enrollment (2,800) is expected to decrease, middle school enrollment (1,337) is expected to stabilize, while elementary/PreK enrollment (5,146) is increasing. The Worthington School District had been in a declining enrollment pattern, with most of the decline occurring at the elementary level; however, the district is beginning to stabilize. A comprehensive enrollment study was completed to determine how to address this situation.
Total Number of School Employees
As of October 2010, The school system is the second largest employer in the school district with 1,278 full- and part-time employees, including teachers and other certified staff, non-teaching staff members and administrators.
2008-09 Budget
Total expenditures are projected at approximately $112 million with 77.8 percent allocated to direct instruction and instructional support. Through careful financial management, the district was able to stretch a 1994 operating levy, originally projected to fund operations for three years, into a sixth year. Voters approved an operating levy in May 2001 to continue the educational excellence and program variety for which the district is known. In November 2006, The Worthington community voted to approve a bond issue which will generate up to $37.5 million for the purpose of facilities, transportation and technology updates.
Size and Population of the Community
The school district is approximately 20 square miles and includes all of the City of Worthington and the Village of Riverlea and parts of the City of Columbus and Sharon and Perry townships. The population increased dramatically from the late 70s to the mid-90s. Growth is now tapering off. In 1980 the population was 28,648; in 2000, it is estimated at approximately 58,000.
Adult Residents' Education
Nearly 32 percent of district residents have a college degree with an additional 17 percent holding a graduate or professional degree. Seven percent hold an associate degree; 23 percent have had some college, but no degree; and about 16 percent have a high school diploma. Five percent do not have a diploma.
Occupation of Residents
Nearly half of the adults employed are in managerial and professional occupations; 37 percent are in technical, sales and administrative support; 7 percent in service occupations; 4 percent in craft and precision production and repair; 4 percent in manufacturing and labor; and 1 percent in farming and other natural resource related industries.
Housing
The district has approximately 23,000 housing units with a wide range of types and prices. Multifamily housing accounts for approximately 40 percent of all units; 25 percent are rental units. Residential development is nearing saturation. The number of households with children has decreased since the late 1980s. Approximately 37 percent of the households today have children in Worthington Schools compared to nearly 50 percent about 13 years ago.
Tax Rates for Schools
The current tax rates are : Full 88.54 mills; Effective rates for residential/agricultural is 46.93 and commercial/industrial is 61.55.
