National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists from Worthington Schools

    Thomas Worthington High School

    Although Math is his favorite subject, Deep says his favorite class at Thomas Worthington was AP Chemistry with Mrs. Wahba. He says she has not only taught chemistry but also kindness. When not in class, Deep loves playing tennis, going out to eat and listening to music with friends. He takes part in activities like Science Olympiad, Community Service Club and Chemistry Club. He hopes to study Actuarial Science at the University of Pennsylvania (although other schools are still in the mix.) Deep would like to someday be an actuary, managing and analyzing risk for businesses, but community service will remain important to him.

    Nathan is currently enjoying the Poli-Rad class at Thomas Worthington because he enjoys learning how the world works. He’s taking classes at Columbus State and says his instructor has really helped him in the class. Outside of school, Nathan bowls, as well as runs cross country and track. He’d like to go to Duke and may major in something related to business or psychology. He’d love to be a day-trader in the future, but he’d make enough money to give it away to good causes.

    Emma is not sure what job she will end up in, but she wants to make a difference in people’s lives. During the week, Emma works at a dental practice that serves many people from Nepal, Bhutan, Somalia, Syria, Iran, Ghana and Saudi Arabia. She says there’s also patients that speak Spanish, and she’s got to put her language skills to work in order to communicate. She is considering dental hygiene and assisting, international law or engineering as possible majors. Her college options include Ohio State, Vanderbilt and Emory University. Her favorite class is Chemistry because it makes her think and is never boring. Emma also enjoys playing guitar, shopping, taking walks, biking, hiking and cooking.

    Anne says thanks to Mr. Green at Worthington Kilbourne, chemistry became her favorite subject. She says he taught her the learning process and the value of being a “giver.” She’s part of Kilbourne’s Junior State of America Chapter where she gets to express her beliefs. She also plays piano and likes to fish. Anne wants to study neuroscience and microbiology at a research university so that she can pursue a job as a scientist. She hopes that any job she gets allows her to continually acquire knowledge. Anne says that she will seek and uphold the truth in life because knowledge eliminates uncertainty and fear.

    Ved enjoys AP Computer Science class with Ms. Stohs and Principals of Engineering, Digital Electronics and Engineering Design and Development with Mr. Karns. He says Mr. Karns has made a huge impact on his life by preparing him for a job in the real world. Ved’s dream job would be creating apps, which he is already starting to do now. Ved plans on majoring in computer science. He hopes that he will create software that will have a positive impact on people. When not at school, Ved enjoys coding and playing tennis.

    Claire enjoys social studies and foreign language classes. Her teacher Mr. McCort has had an impact on her life because he has taught her to think more critically. Claire loves to write and would like to someday be a professional writer or a historian. She is still looking at a lot of college options. She enjoys playing the clarinet and is in several ensembles. Claire plans on changing the world by conducting meaningful research that creates or contributes to positive social change.
