Sustainability
The Worthington Board of Education has charged the administration with a goal for 2024-2025 to assemble a task force of internal and external stakeholders to evaluate current Worthington Schools sustainability efforts. The committee will :
- Create a report detailing those efforts and areas of strength and potential improvement.
- Examine all areas with respect to cost savings, cost neutrality, or increased cost.
- Set goals for climate action in Worthington Schools in the short-term, mid-term, and long-term.
At the task force’s first meeting, they identified various sustainability practices that the district should discuss and consider under the categories of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. They also had a presentation about the Central Ohio Solid Waste Authority's (SWACO) Recycling Champions Program. The program provides educational materials on recycling and grant funding for recycling containers.
At their second meeting, they continued discussing the identified practices and begin to divide them into into three phases of implementation:
- Immediate - now, before the end of the school year!
- Short term - 1-3 years
- Long term - 3+ years
As the members discuss each sustainability practice, they always consider if the results are measurable & achievable, practices are cost-neutral or can be offset by grant funding and the programs can involve student and staff participation.
We will continue to provide updates after each meeting and our progress as we chart the path to our districts' sustainable future!
