High School Grading During COVID-19 Remote Learning
We hope you and your loved ones are doing well during this time. The COVID-19 pandemic and the statewide suspension of typical, face-to-face instruction due to the social distancing mandate by Governor DeWine have impacted teaching and learning in all Ohio schools. Thus, how we assess student learning will also be impacted.
- Grades during a time of crisis cannot be the same as they are during a typical school setting. Therefore, Worthington Schools will move to a Pass/Incomplete grading system for 7th-12th grade students for the 4th quarter and a letter grade average from the 3rd and 4th quarter for the 2nd semester grade of the 2019-2020 school year.
- Remote learning should not have an adverse impact on student grades;
- During this time, many students will experience positive learning gains in a way that may not happen in the traditional school setting;
- Growth and mastery occur with effective feedback - independent from percentages and letter grades; and
- Effective feedback, grading, and evaluation can provide an important contribution to a healthy social-emotional state.
We are expecting teachers to examine practices that are in alignment with grading experts, such as R. Wormeli, T. Guskey, and K. O’Connor. To start, not all assignments need to have a grade. Teachers will not assign points to every activity they design for students during our remote learning time.
4th Quarter Grades
Teachers will evaluate students as either Passing (P) or Incomplete (I). All “P” grades will convert to 4.0 quality points in a child’s GPA; students in AP/IB classes will have their Passing mark weighted accordingly (5.0). Students who have an “I” grade will be given an intervention plan and an opportunity to earn a Passing grade by early fall. If a student does not complete the obligations to earn a (P) passing grade, the (I) incomplete will translate into a (U), which is an Unsatisfactory. Incomplete and Unsatisfactory grades will not be calculated using quality points. However, it is possible that the student may have to repeat the semester course in order to address learning gaps and ultimately earn credit.
Exams & Second Semester Grades
There will not be semester exams. The 2nd semester grade will be calculated as a letter grade based on the average from the 3rd and 4th quarter quality points. For example, a student who earned a B (3.0) third quarter and a P (4.0) fourth quarter, will receive an A (3.5) for the semester. Similar to previous years, high school courses taken by students in middle schools will not impact the high school GPA.
Note: College Credit Plus classes will be calculated based on the institution’s standards.
OHSAA, College Admissions and NCAA Eligibility
The Ohio High School Athletic Association will count Passing (P) grades as credit toward that course, which will be sufficient to maintain eligibility for athletic participation. Because 2nd semester grades will be letter grades, there will be no impact on calculations for college admissions or for the NCAA Eligibility Center.
