83-Year-Old Korean War Vet Writes Thank-You Notes For Entire Colonial Hills Class
Fifth graders at Colonial Hills Elementary School recently
reached out to a Korean War vet who was touched by their letters. As part of a class service project, Lauren Culp’s students
wrote to Mr. Shaeffer who is an 83-year-old Korean War veteran from
Westerville. Shaeffer was surprised with the letters on his way back from
Washington, DC as part of an “Honor Flight” to visit war memorials. The letters
thanked Shaeffer for his service. Shaeffer then did something that surprised the students. He
wrote EACH CHILD a thank-you note. The school was amazed by the box of letters
which arrived with each one addressed to a student in the class. They even
referenced items the children wrote about.
